Function
Propylene glycol is used as an emulsifier, solvent, hygroscopic and excipient. It reduces the freezing point and increases the boiling point of products. It is used in beverages, crackers, cakes, confectioneries, beer, salad dressings and baking mixes.
Other Use and Industries
Propylene glycol is used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. These industries utilize it for its various features depending on specific product requirements. Propylene glycol is used in creams, lotions, deodorants, shampoos, skin care products, sanitizers, pills, injection fluids, therapy oils and many more products. It is also used to manufacture plastics, kitchenware, paints and adhesives.
Health Effects
Propylene glycol is converted into lactic acid in the body. Lactic acid helps prevent colon cancer and lowers blood pressure, inflammation and cholesterol. It also increases immunity.
Propylene glycol in large doses can lead to liver, heart and nervous system disorders as it can damage human cells. Propylene glycol can even disrupt the body’s chemical balance, leading to excessive acid production that can cause metabolic problems. After prolonged contact with skin or eyes, it can cause irritation.
Origins
Propylene glycol is made by reacting water with propylene oxide. It can be also made from converting glycerol, a byproduct of biodiesel. Propylene glycol is manufactured industrially.
